Product Description
Groth Vineyards and Winery is a family-owned winery in Oakville, California, founded by Judy and David Groth in 1981. The Groths were searching for a piece of land to grow high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon and were introduced to a 121-acre stretch of valley floor in Oakville by their Realtor, Ren Harris. Despite the dilapidated dairy barns and frost-bitten Napa Gamay vines, the Groths saw the potential for great wine and purchased the land. In 1982, they also purchased a second parcel of land in the Oak Knoll District, where they discovered the perfect conditions for growing Merlot and Chardonnay.
With Judy’s job as the CFO of Atari providing financial stability, the Groths began selling their fruit to neighbors and dreaming of one day making their own wine. That dream became a reality when they partnered with winemaker Nils Venge, who identified a “sweet spot” in the vineyard with the potential to produce world-class wine. In 1988, their Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon received a 100-point rating.
Over the years, the Groths have continued to evolve and improve their wines, with winemaker Michael Weis joining the team in 1994 and working to replant the vineyards block by block. Today, Groth Vineyards and Winery is a respected and beloved name in the wine industry, producing high-quality wines that reflect the dedication and passion of the Groth family and their team.
The Groths are dedicated stewards of the land and believe that the quality of their wines is inextricably linked to the well-being of their vineyards. They farm their land sustainably, taking into consideration the impact on the environment and the health of the entire Napa Valley watershed. In 2018, they initiated an extensive replanting effort that will take place over 30 years across both of their estates.
Cabernet Sauvignon is the primary focus of Groth Vineyards and Winery, and the vineyards are planted to produce the most authentic and expressive wine possible. The Hillview Estate in Oak Knoll is planted with 37 acres of vines and is ideal for growing Chardonnay and Merlot. The Groths may also experiment with other varieties on their estates as the vineyards dictate.
Each variety is carefully planted to align with its ideal soil type, rootstock, clone, and trellising. From 1999 to 2003, all 54 acres of the Oakville Estate Cabernet Sauvignon were replanted with new clones and rootstock. The Groths halted production of their Reserve Cabernet during this time and reintroduced the wine in 2005 once the newly planted vines had come of age.

Groth Vineyards and Winery is committed to sustainability and has implemented several practices to reduce their environmental impact, such as using solar panels to power the winery and adopting a fish-friendly farming certification. They also support local organizations and charities, including the Napa Valley Community Foundation and the Napa Valley Vintners.
In conclusion, Groth Vineyards and Winery is a family-owned winery in Oakville, California, known for producing high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon and other wines. The Groths are dedicated to sustainability and the well-being of their vineyards, and their wines reflect their passion and commitment to excellence.
