Hugh Hamilton Wines is a family-owned winery located in the McLaren Vale region of South Australia. The winery has a long and rich history, with roots dating back to the early 1800s when Hugh Hamilton, a Scottish immigrant, settled in the region and began planting vineyards.
The McLaren Vale region, located about 35 kilometers south of Adelaide, is known for its Mediterranean climate and diverse range of soil types. The region’s warm, dry summers and mild winters provide the perfect conditions for growing a variety of grape varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Grenache, and Chardonnay.
Hugh Hamilton Wines is situated in the heart of McLaren Vale, on the same land that Hugh Hamilton first planted his vineyards over 200 years ago. Today, the winery is run by the fifth and sixth generations of the Hamilton family and is committed to producing high-quality, expressive wines that reflect the unique character of the region.
The winery’s vineyards are planted with a variety of grape varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Grenache, and Chardonnay. The vines are grown using sustainable and environmentally-friendly practices, with a focus on producing healthy, high-quality grapes.
Hugh Hamilton Wines is particularly renowned for its Shiraz wines, which are known for their deep, rich flavors and bold, full-bodied character. The winery’s flagship wine is the Hugh Hamilton “The Joker” Shiraz, a wine that has garnered numerous accolades and awards over the years.
In addition to its Shiraz wines, the winery is also known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, and Chardonnay wines. These wines are all highly regarded for their quality and expression of the McLaren Vale region.
The winemaking at Hugh Hamilton Wines is led by winemaker Nick Stock, who has a passion for crafting expressive, terroir-driven wines. Stock and his team employ a range of traditional and modern winemaking techniques to produce wines that are true to the character of the McLaren Vale region and the grapes used.
The winery has a state-of-the-art winemaking facility, where the grapes are carefully sorted and processed to ensure the highest quality wines. The wines are then aged in oak barrels to add depth and complexity to their flavors.
In summary, Hugh Hamilton Wines is a respected and well-regarded winery that produces high-quality wines that reflect the character of the McLaren Vale region. From its rich history and diverse range of grape varieties to its renowned winemaking team, Hugh Hamilton Wines is a standout producer in the world of wine.

3 weeks agoOfficially my favourite winery in Australia!!! This is where history, quality produce, passion, and service gets masterfully blended together for a one-of-a-kind experience. Thanks to Alex for a splendid experience!!! Certainly a gem and asset to the winery! One of, if not the best storytelling we’ve experienced in any hospitality setting - definitely did the grapes justice… we ended up becoming a black sheep club member because of her (and of course outstanding wine and grape quality to back it up🥂) Can’t wait to recieve our first batch and many more batches to come. Highly recommend this winery to all levels of wine lovers… be it amateurs, wine enthusiast and lovers like us, or even sommeliers, this place will not let you down :)

a month agoAmazing wines and tasting experience with Jodi. Story of how the winery started was interesting and I came away with a couple bottles. The view was spectacular and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting a boutique wine tasting experience in McLaren Vale!

5 months agoWe booked “The Taste of Premium,” and it was a perfect ending to our wine tasting tour. It was complemented by the breathtaking view overlooking their vineyard, making you want to linger there for hours. The staff delivered the history of the winery perfectly, as they were very knowledgeable. We found ourselves genuinely interested in their story.

a week agoSo amazing! We visited the cellar door twice in our one week holiday in McLaren vale from QLD. We loved the sheep theme, hospitality, panoramic view, the quality of the wines, particularly the story and taste of Sapevari (oldest known wine grape in history). Highly recommend to any visitor to McLaren Vale

2 months agoFantastic winery with wonderful views! We purchased a bottle of wine and a small snack board to have on the deck. The board could be modified for gluten intolerances. Lovely staff, thank you to Kath and others for the great hospitality and service. My apologies (review clarified) - I meant Kath kindly did substitute the bread for some GF crackers and even gave my gluten loving husband the bread!
