Kay Brothers Winery & Cellar Door is a family-owned and operated winery located in the heart of the McLaren Vale wine region in South Australia. The winery has a long and rich history dating back to the late 1800s, when the Kay brothers first settled in the area and started planting grapevines. The original vineyards were located in the Blewitt Springs sub-region, which has a unique terroir characterized by red clay soil and a Mediterranean climate. This terroir is particularly well-suited to growing a variety of grape varieties, including Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, and Viognier.

Over the years, Kay Brothers has gained a reputation for producing high-quality, expressive wines that showcase the character of the McLaren Vale region. The winery is particularly known for its Shiraz wines, which are made from grapes grown in the Amery Vineyard, a historic single vineyard site that has been owned by the Kay family for over a century. The Kay Brothers Amery Vineyard Shiraz is a full-bodied wine with ripe fruit flavors and a long, elegant finish. It has received numerous accolades and awards, including gold medals at the Sydney Wine Show and the National Wine Show of Australia.

In addition to its Shiraz wines, Kay Brothers also produces a range of other red and white wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Viognier, and Chardonnay. One of the winery’s most famous red wines is the Kay Brothers Hillside Cabernet Sauvignon, which is made from grapes grown in the rolling hills of the McLaren Vale region. This wine is known for its complex flavors and long finish, and has received numerous accolades and awards, including gold medals at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show and the National Wine Show of Australia.

In the winemaking process, Kay Brothers employs traditional techniques such as open fermentation and basket pressing to ensure that the unique character of each individual vineyard is preserved in the final wine. The winery also uses a combination of French oak barrels and stainless steel tanks for aging and fermentation, depending on the specific needs of each wine. The winemaking team at Kay Brothers is led by winemaker Chris Kay, who has over 20 years of experience in the wine industry and is passionate about producing wines that reflect the unique character of the McLaren Vale region.

In addition to its world-class wines, Kay Brothers Winery & Cellar Door is also a popular destination for tourists and wine lovers, offering guided tours of the vineyards and winemaking facilities, as well as tastings and special events. The winery’s charming cellar door is a great place to relax and enjoy a glass of wine while taking in the stunning views of the surrounding countryside. The cellar door also features a gift shop, where visitors can purchase bottles of Kay Brothers wine and other local products.

Overall, Kay Brothers Winery & Cellar Door is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in experiencing the best that the McLaren Vale region has to offer. With its rich history, beautiful vineyards, and exceptional wines, it is a true gem of the South Australian wine industry. Whether you are a seasoned wine connoisseur or just looking to try something new, Kay Brothers Winery & Cellar Door has something to offer everyone.

So far my favourite winery in McLaren Vale. We had plenty of questions and Sophie answered them all. Wine tasting was free but had to pay $5 if you wanted to try the the wine from the 125 year old vine wine. So we did, Worth it!
