Quails’ Gate Winery is a family-owned winery located in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, Canada. Founded in 1989 by Ben and Tony Stewart, the winery is now run by the second generation of the Stewart family.

Quails’ Gate is known for its stunning location, set on a bluff overlooking Okanagan Lake and surrounded by vineyards. The winery is named after the quail that inhabit the area and the gate that marks the entrance to the property.

The vineyards at Quails’ Gate span over 200 acres and are planted with a variety of grape varieties, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Merlot. The winery is also home to a small experimental vineyard where new grape varieties are tested.

Quails’ Gate is known for producing high-quality, expressive wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Okanagan Valley. One of the winery’s most famous wines is the Old Vines Foch, a bold, full-bodied red wine made from the Marechal Foch grape variety. This wine has received numerous accolades and is highly sought after by wine collectors.

In addition to the Old Vines Foch, Quails’ Gate is also known for its Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Riesling. The winery’s Chardonnay is a bright, fruit-forward wine with notes of citrus and green apple, while the Pinot Noir is a delicate, elegant wine with flavors of red cherry and spice. The Riesling is a crisp, aromatic wine with flavors of green apple and citrus.

Quails’ Gate prides itself on using traditional wine-making techniques and focusing on quality over quantity. All of the winery’s wines are fermented in small batches using natural yeasts, and many of the wines are aged in oak barrels to add depth and complexity.

In addition to its wine production, Quails’ Gate also operates a popular restaurant and tasting room, where visitors can enjoy a variety of local dishes and taste the winery’s wines. The winery also offers guided tours of the vineyards and winery, as well as wine education classes and events.

Overall, Quails’ Gate Winery is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in high-quality wine and beautiful, picturesque surroundings. Whether you are a seasoned wine connoisseur or just looking to learn more about the wine-making process, Quails’ Gate has something for everyone.

Though not normally one to leave reviews. I was taken aback by my experience at Quails Gate versus the reviews and experience of friends who have been. I therefore felt it necessary to voice this. The atmosphere was not pleasing, it was slightly chaotic, with no background music. We were given a bar spot for our tasting, after about 5 minutes another couple were allowed to barge in next to us, moving us so far along I couldn’t even reach my handbag. Following this we were absolutely refused entry outside even for 30 seconds to take a photo which arguably is the only reason to visit the vineyard (the views). After trying to shake off our some what unsatisfactory experience in the wine shop we decided to (as per recommendations from staff) grab a bite to eat and a drink in the restaurant. We essentially had to argue our way in to a venue to get one of the many empty tables, after being told by Emily that we’d have a “better experience” waiting half an hour standing outside before being seated. However, I can say, once seated the other staff were fantastic. If it weren’t for Ana our day would not have been turned around. Not worth the hype, the food itself was average and under seasoned.

This was a must for our bride to be and I want to share that the service from the time I first called them to our dining was impeccable. Our group was quite large, 10 and they were incredibly accommodating for us to have a tasting and dinner on a Friday evening. We bought a couple of bottles to sit in the market area to enjoy before dinner and it was relaxing. Our only disappointment was it wasn't in the area facing the water but we still enjoyed our time. The person who lead our tasting was very informative and had us laughing too. Dinner service was on point! We expected that our bills would have been all one but they actually divided it up. Amazing! We highly recommend reservations so you don't miss this spot!

This is our second time at Quail’s Gate and unfortunately will be the last. I would like to give an immense shoutout to Deb, our server facilitating the wine tasting. She was so knowledgeable, kind and personable, and is probably the backbone in service of the winery. Thank you Deb! Our experience: We arrived early for our tasting and were greeted by the front host, Sarah. Typically I’d expect a warm welcome from any establishment where tourism is so popular, but off the bat Sarah was quite rude, giving our group unsolicited attitude. She then told us we could go for a walk since we were early, which we thought was a joke since it was downpouring rain. But it seemed she was serious and there was nowhere for us to wait in the winery other than outside. Following our tasting with the wonderful Deb, we were in the shop looking around and waiting when Sarah once again approached us and asked us to move out of the area we were in. We were honestly shocked because plenty of other guests were in the shop too and it felt like at this point we were just being picked on. Based on the overall atmosphere and service, I’d highly recommend taking your wine tasting experience elsewhere. We certainly won’t be returning and hope our review saves others from the experience. Plenty of other fabulous wineries in the area!

Quails’ Gate Winery feels like home the moment you arrive. It’s warm, welcoming, and has that special family-run charm. The landscape is absolutely stunning—overlooking Okanagan Lake with endless views, especially magical in the spring and summer seasons. Their Rosé is one of my favorites—crisp, refreshing, and perfect for sunny days on the patio. Whether you’re there for wine tasting, the view, or just to relax, this place never disappoints. Highly recommended!

Highly recommend Quail’s Gate Winery if you’re in Kelowna - can see why it is reviewed so well! Staff were lovely (Danielle in the restaurant was fab), wine was great and the food was delicious. The views were also incredible, would love to go back and hopefully will on another visit. Also saw lots of quail around, super cute!
